The Concorde flight AF4590 burst into flames and smashed into a motel near the town of Gonesse, about 10 miles north of Paris after take off from Charles De Gaulle airport, on July 25, 2000 at about 4.44pm local time.

Air France stopped flying the supersonic jets in 2003.

All 109 people on board the Air France flight as well as four people on the ground were killed. All but four of the passengers were German tourists heading to New York to join a luxury cruise to the Caribbean. There was one Briton on board. Nine French crew members also died.

The US airline Continental is to appeal against a French court judgment ruling that it was to blame for the crash of an Air France Concorde over a Parisian suburb more than 10 years ago.

A titanium strip allegedly fell off a Continental DC-10 which took off just before the Concorde. Judicial investigators say the strip was improperly installed on the DC-10 engine, prompting the charges against the airline, Ford and Taylor.

The French court agreed, ruling that Continental Airlines and one of its mechanics were guilty of involuntary homicide concerning the deaths of 100 passengers, nine crew, and four people on the ground.

People found to be guilty:

John Taylor, 42, a mechanic who installed the titanium strip was fined €2,000 and given a suspended 15-month prison sentence. His supervisor

Stanley Ford, who was accused of approving the work without checking it, was acquitted.

Henri Perrier, 81, a French Aérospatiale executive, and two other French officials, Jacques Hérubel and Claude Frantzen, formerly who certified the jet's airworthiness.

Perrier, who was head of the Concorde programme at Aérospatiale had been accused of ignoring warnings about the safety of the aircraft during its 27 years in service after a string of incidents involving exploding Concorde tyres.

An investigation shows that a tire under the left wing blew on during take off. it struck the small strip of titanium on the runway.

The blown tire sent debris into the wing, causing the fuel tank to rupture and sparking the catastrophic fire that led to the crash.

More Than 60 Killed in Stampede at Indian Temple in Uttar Pradesh

An incident happen in Janki temple in Pratapgarh district in Uttar Pradesh state where at least 63 people have been killed and scored of others injured in a stampede at a temple in a small town.

A large crowd gathered on Thursday for a ritual of feast and distribution of free utensils and clothes which is to mark the anniversary of the death of the wife of a Hindu holy man who runs a charitable trust.

The town where the tragedy occurred is about 180 kilometers southeast of the state capital, Lucknow.

Police say the stampede took place when a large gate collapsed and fell on some devotees. A senior police officer in Pratapgarh district, Brij Lal, says this caused the crowd to panic.

The people gathered there are around 6000 and mostly are local. The police mentioned that it is not clear what cause the gathe to collapse.Some reports say it was under construction.

As people tried to escape, many tripped and fell. The victims were mostly poor villagers who had gone to get the free gifts.

Rescue operations continued for several hours, with local people joining the police to extricate those trapped. The injured were taken to hospitals in nearby towns.

Witnesses say there were not enough volunteers or arrangements to control the large crowd.

This kind of cases happen before many times where in 2008, nearly 300 people died in two separeted stampedes at temples in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan states. Stampedes have claimed many lives at religious ceremonies held at temples in small towns, where the local administration is not equipped to handle large crowds.

While hydroquinone will also cause the same effects, except discolouration of the skin and also made the skin hypersensitive.The effect of using hydroquinone can prevent pigmentation process where the process reduces protection of the skin to ultraviolet rays and excessive sunlight which can cause skin cancer.

As such, she advised the public to stop using the products and for traders to stop selling them with immediate effect because if trader caught for selling these products, they will be fined up to RM25,000 or three year's jail or both if convicted for violating the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.

soft drinks can cause pancreatic cancer

A study in Singapore had found that drinking sugared soft drinks can cause pancreatic cancer. It was led by the University of Minnesota which followed some 60,000 people in Singapore for 14 years.

Drinking more than two soft drinks a week can increase 87 percent higher chance of getting pancreatic cancer. The article is on Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

The conclusions were drawn using data from the Singapore Chinese Health Study at the National University of Singapore, which is a broad, long term project on cancer.

In this particular study, the theory is that sugar may increase pancreatic cancer cells.

But one leading oncologist in Singapore says it is too early to draw this link.

A lot of people disagree with this statement because if sugar is the cause of pancreatic cancer , so other diets such as rice also have a lot of glucose which increase the level of sugar

Besides sugar, other studies have linked the disease with eating burnt red meat as well.

Pancreatic cancer sufferers have a low survival rate, and the illness is said to affect some 230,000 people globally.

Commander George Zamka is the person that bring the fragments of moon rick by Neil Amstrong up to Mount Everest by a former shuttle astronaut last spring. Zamka accepted the rocks last month and said he would make sure they got into the new space station compartments flying up on Endeavour. They will serve, he said, "as a reminder to all of the astronauts who are up there, what human beings can do and what our challenges are."

Zamka is 47 year ld Marine colonel grew up in New York, Rochester Hills, Mich., and Medellin, Colombia, his mother's hometown. It was "a great enticement" for pursuing an aviation career. His Colombian pilot uncle also was an influence.

Zamka went on to become a fighter pilot. He and wife Elisa have a 15-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy.
Pilot Terry Virts' childhood revolved around the space program.

He grew up in Columbia, Md., not far from Goddard Space Flight Center, where his parents worked. Mom was a secretary, and dad was a technician for NASA's Landsat satellites.

Virts, 42, said his first book as a child was about the Apollo moon landings and his bedroom was adorned with rocket and airplane posters. He'd occasionally accompany his father to the satellite control room at Goddard in the 1970s.

Former NFL star Warren Sapp Arrested for Domestic Battery

Warren Sapp who is the Former NFL was arrested by Miami Beach Police this afternoon for charged with misdemeanor domestic battery stemming from an allegedly violent confrontation with his girlfriend.

According to the Miami Beach Police Department, Sapp is accused of attacking his girlfriend of two years at around 5:00 AM Saturday at the Shore Club Hotel.

According to the arrest report, the alleged victim had "a swollen right knee and bruises on the back of her neck."

Sapp allowed her girlfriend to sleep in the hotel room but early in the morning , he pulled her out of the bed and start fighting about the guys she was hanging with earlier Friday night.

Sapp's girlfriend told cops that during the argument Sapp "grabbed her and began to choke her." He eventually threw her out of the room, she claims.

Sapp is in Miami for the Super Bowl and serves as an analyst for the NFL Network and on Showtime's "Inside the NFL."

When cops spoke to Sapp, he told them he had allowed the woman to stay in his room -- but later on decided he wanted her to leave because "he was expecting company." He told police he was trying to help her and she fell.

The NFL Network released a statement saying they were aware of the incident and that Sapp will not appear on the NFL Network until they review the matter.

Sapp is scheduled to co-host an event at BED Miami tonight. They tell us they haven't heard about the incident and, as of now, everything is still a go.

Nasa space shuttle launch time

This is the last operational year for the Space Shuttle, water was found on the moon, SpaceShip Two was unveiled and the Obama administration submitted a new roadmap for NASA’s future. Today, the Shuttle launches for the first time this year, and unfortunately for the last time at night. Endeavour, the spacecraft for this mission, will deliver a third connecting module – the Tranquility node – to the ISS and a seven-windowed cupola to be used as a control room for robotics. The mission will feature three spacewalks.

The pilot, Terry Virts, is a lucky rookie and is obviously looking forward to his first stay in space: “Everybody on their first spaceflight is just looking forward to going into space. It’s an amazing concept to think of leaving the planet Earth, and just not that many people have gotten to do that, so I’m really looking forward to that.

Stiff wind rattled the launch site Saturday night as the fuel flowed into the shuttle, but forecasters were hopeful the gusts would subside in time for the 4:39 a.m. ET liftoff. The odds of good weather were 80 percent.

You have no idea how much I’d give to spend a few hours up there, floating while watching the Earth beneath me thanks to the breathtaking panorama the module is going to provide. But don’t worry, you don’t need to go to space to enjoy beautiful visuals. If you’re on the East Coast, there’s a good chance that you may see the Shutle’s beautiful fire trail rising up in the sky.

Karachi violence blow to Pakistan economy

KARACHI — A wave of political and sectarian violence sweeping Karachi threatens heavy financial losses in the country's economic hub, where analysts fear Islamists are bent on fanning maximum instability.

Bomb attacks targeting Shiite Muslims have killed 76 people in six weeks, devastating riots and a surge in political shootings have sparked fears that after relative quiet, Karachi is returning to the eye of the storm.

Pakistan's richest city has been spared the worst of a two-year Islamist bombing campaign but is plagued by crime and kidnappings, which some analysts say militant groups use to bankroll campaigns in the northwest and Afghanistan.

"Karachi accounts for nearly 45 percent of Pakistan's GDP," independent economist A.B. Shahid told AFP.
"It translates into roughly 5 billion rupees (180 million dollars) per day and tax revenues of one billion rupees per day," he said.

The city is a national headquarters for industry and the service sector, a bustling port city on the Arabian sea with a teeming population of 16 million.

"If the collapse of Pakistan's economy is the intention of its adversaries, then the easiest route to follow is ensure that Karachi's activity comes to a complete standstill," said Shahid.

Pakistan recorded two percent gross domestic product growth last fiscal year, which ended on June 30, the worst-recorded economic growth since the financial year 1997-1998.

Ashfaq Hasan Khan, once economic advisor to former president Pervez Musharraf, said violence in Karachi was aimed at crippling Pakistan's economy.

"Karachi has been spared of terrorism and violence for a long time and was contributing massively to the country's weak economy, but now the plotters want to completely cripple Pakistan's economy by attacking our port city," he said.

It is largely impossible to calculate exact losses caused by violence and closures, such as for mourning after December 28 and February 5 bomb attacks on Shiite Muslims.

"We can't calculate the exact loss to the country's economy in case of violence or terror attacks on Karachi because it involves many factors. But any day Karachi closes, it loses many billions of rupees," said Khan.
The shutdown of the city Saturday, when thousands attended funerals for the 33 people killed on February 5, cost 12 to 15 billion rupees, he estimated.

Officials say growing security concerns and targeted killings, which have exposed political tensions, tarnish Karachi's attraction for foreign investors.

"We are painstakingly convincing foreign investors to come here and many of them do agree but one incident forces them to pull back," Zubair Motiwala, an investment advisor in the provincial government, told AFP.
"Militancy in the northwest is dangerous for Karachi as well, as foreign investors take a general view of the whole country," Motiwala said.

The situation also bodes ill for the stock market, still recovering from an abysmal 2008, when it suffered heavily from political turmoil, militancy and the global recession.

"Violence in Karachi affects market sentiments and results in a slowdown in foreign investment," said Mohammad Sohail, chief of Topline Securities.

The government paid around two billion rupees (24 million dollars) to traders and shopkeepers whose shops and commodities went up in smoke when arsonists and rioters went on the rampage after the December 28 attack.

"Violence after the blast on Ashura damaged around 1,500 shops in 30 markets in Karachi, which damaged confidence of investors a great deal," said Motiwala.

Hundreds of workers are still out of work, waiting for their businesses to be rebuilt.

They experienced further problems from political violence, which officials say has killed around 85 people, mainly activists from Awami National Party (ANP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) so far this year.
Both ANP and MQM are coalition partners of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital.

"I am father of four surviving on daily wages," said 31-year-old Mohammad Asghar, who said for four days he could not go out to work in his western Orangi neighbourhood, where many of the killings were concentrated.

"My pocket feeds my children. When it is empty my kids go hungry," he said.

UUP leader Empey reserves judgement on NI deal

The UUP will seek clarification from Prime Minister Gordon Brown about the deal reached by the DUP and Sinn Fein, party leader Sir Reg Empey has said.

Sir Reg said his party should have been told what the agreement contained before it was made public.

He refused to give an undertaking that the UUP would take part in discussions on Monday about a new justice minister.

He said the UUP needs clarity on issues such as the Public Prosecution Service which do not feature in the agreement.

Ulster Unionist support for the agreement is seen as crucial, because the DUP has long insisted the wider unionist community needed confidence before a deal could be reached on devolving policing and justice powers.

Throughout the talks between the DUP and Sinn Fein at Hillsborough Castle, the Ulster Unionists voiced their frustration at being excluded.

It also emerged in recent weeks that the Orange Order convened secret unity talks between the DUP and UUP in early December.

The parties discussed the possibility of electoral pacts and forming a unionist bloc at Stormont.
However, the Ulster Unionists have ruled out any merger with the DUP and restated their commitment to their electoral pact with the Conservative Party, where they will field joint candidates under the banner Ulster Conservatives and Unionists - New Force (UCUNF).

Conservative leader David Cameron said on Friday: "We welcome the fact that an agreement has been reached between the Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein, and we support the determination of the British and Irish governments in helping to bring this about.

"We hope this leads to the completion of devolution and the re-establishment of political stability in Northern Ireland."

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here today adjourned the sodomy trial of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Monday after the trial judge, the prosecution and the defence revisited the Desa Damansara condominium where the alleged sodomy on Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan took place.

Among those who visited the Unit 11-5-1 of the condominium were Judge Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah, Anwar and Mohd Saiful.

They were there at noon and left about 50 minutes later.

It was the second visit to the condominium following a request by the defence. The parties in the trial visited the same place yesterday.

Earlier Mohd Saiful told the High Court that he did not pass motion for two days after he was sodomised by Anwar.

He also testified that the trousers he was wearing on the day of the incident were a gift from Anwar.

Mohd Saiful was testifying under examination-in-chief by lead prosecutor Solicitor-General II Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden on the third day of the trial.

Today's proceedings started at 9.51am with Mohd Saiful giving testimony on the samples taken from his body, shirt and underwear.

He also said that he once considered Anwar a charismatic leader and it was for that reason that he came to work for the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor.

Mohd Saiful, 25, who is a former aide of Anwar, was the first witness to take the stand when the trial started on Wednesday.

Mohd Yusof later told the court that he had completed his examination-in-chief on Mohd Saiful.

Meanwhile three trucks and two water cannon trucks of the Federal Reserve Unit took position at the compound of the Jalan Duta Court Complex at 10.15am following reports that Anwar's supporters might stage a demonstration in the area after the Friday prayers.

Anwar, 63, the PKR advisor and Permatang Pauh member of parliament, is charged with sodomising Mohd Saiful at Unit 11-5-1, Desa Damansara Condominium, Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara, between 3.01pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.

He is charged under Section 377B of the Penal Code and faces up to 20 years' jail and whipping upon conviction.

The trial takes place 18 months after Anwar was first charge in August 2008.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 — PKR communications director Jonson Chong will be filing a police report today against national newspaper, Utusan Malaysia allegedly for publishing “false news” on Sodomy II.

“I’m going to lodge a report against Utusan for publishing false news,” Chong, a lawyer by training, told reporters at the court complex here this evening.

He was rushing to the Tropicana police station in Merchant Square, Petaling Jaya, just two doors away from the political party’s headquarters.

A dissatisfied Chong said the Malay-language daily’s act was tantamount to contempt of court, despite the High Court’s earlier refusal to cite Utusan for the offence.

“The judge said: ‘If you want to take this up, go lodge a police report’,” Chong claimed.

“So we take it up to prove their intent was malicious,” he added.

PKR adviser, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, 62, is on trial for allegedly sodomising his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 24, at an upscale condominium in Damansara Heights two years ago.

His lawyers had earlier made a bid to cite Utusan Malaysia for contempt for publishing a news article that is said to contain material that the trial judge, Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah, had ordered expunged from the court records yesterday.

Anwar, who spoke to reporters at the courthouse steps on his way out, lashed out at the influential Umno-owned newspaper for publishing the news.

“In this case, if there is already a charge, let me face a fair judicial system,” a grim-looking Anwar said, “but no.”

“Yesterday’s statement, we have checked our records, the prosecution’s and the court’s, there were no statements as mentioned on the front page of Utusan, meaning Utusan is a tool of Umno.

“They want to fight me in front, cannot, so they make a dirty, rude and disgusting false accusation,” the ex-deputy prime minister formerly from Umno railed.

Mohd Saiful said he initially went to the Tawakal Hospital in Jalan Pahang here but could not do the examination because the hospital only operates for half a day..

He said he then he was was accompanied by an uncle named Tuah Mohd Ali to the Pusrawi Hospital in Jalan Tun Razak
Mohd Saiful said at this hospital, he met Dr Mohd Osman Abdul Hamid and told the doctor that he had a stomach ache and felt pain in the anus.

He also mentioned that the doctor asked him to remove the pants and put something in his anus abd during this time he informed the doctor that he had been been sodomised and wanted to do a medical examination

He said Dr Mohd Osman immediately stopped the examination and told him to wear back his pants.
The doctor asked him to do futher treatment in HKL (Hospital Kuala Lumpur) because that hospital did not have the facilities to do a forensic examination and that the medical report from the hospital could not be used in a court later.

"He then told me get the examination done at HKL (Hospital Kuala Lumpur). I followed his advice and went straight to HKL. Initially I did not know where to go but looking at it logically, I went to the outpatient ward to register at 3pm.

Earlier in today's proceedings, he had given testimony in camera for about 30 minutes before the judge, the prosecution and defence teams, himself and Anwar left the courthouse at 11.43am to visit the condominium where the alleged sodomy took place.

When hearing resumed in open court, Mohd Saiful continued with his testimony on the hospital visits.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 — Let see what happen to the sodomy case of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. At 11am, the high court adjourned for the prosecutors and defence team to visit the condominium where the opposition leader was claim to sodomised his former aide Mohd Saiful.

This claim to happen in Unit 11-5-1 of Desa Damansara Condominium in Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara. between 3.01pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008. He also said the visit to the condominium required the use of a password which he said was “Mokhtar”.

The 62 years old PKR leader has denied the charge, describing it as “evil, frivolous lies by those in power” when the charge was read out to him.

He is charged under Section 377B of the Penal Code and can be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in jail and whipping upon conviction. The trial is taking place 18 months after Anwar was charged in court in August 2008.

Anwar’s lead counsel Karpal Singh yesterday asked for Saiful’s testimony to be heard in-camera after he graphically described Anwar’s use of profanity in asking for sex.
The 24-year-old had also testified he had worked for Anwar for four months, from early March 2008 to June 28 of the same year, and stopped being the Permatang Pauh MP’s special aide because he did not want to be further abused.

Kuala Lumpur: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s semen was found in the body of his former private assistant, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

The opening statement by Solicitor-General II Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden kicked off the sodomy trial in a packed courtroom at the High Court yesterday.

The prosecution then called its first witness, Saiful, who testified that he used the codename, “Mokhtar”, each time he went to the plush Bukit Damansara condominium.

Speaking in a low voice, Saiful, 25, began to give a blow-by-blow account of what transpired in the afternoon of June 26, 2008.

His testimony, however, was stopped at the point where he was telling the court how Anwar hugged him in a room at the condo unit.

Further testimony on what transpired in the room will be heard in camera today.

Earlier, the witness said he arrived at the condominium at 2.45pm that day to meet Anwar. Saiful was Anwar’s private assistant for four months until he resigned the next day.

Saiful said he sent Anwar an email informing him he wanted to resign, citing the reason that he was not willing to be “used by Anwar any longer”.

On the day of the alleged sodomy, Saiful said he went to the condominium to hand over documents which were given to him by someone on Anwar’s staff, identified as Ibrahim Yaacob.

“We were supposed to discuss work-related matters,” he told the court.

Saiful said he stopped his van at the security post and said the codename, “Mokhtar”, to the guards before being allowed in.

“This was what I was told to say every time I went to the
condominium,” he said when examined by Yusof who is leading the prosecution team.

He parked the vehicle and took the lift to unit 11-5-1.

Yusof: What happened then?

Saiful: The door to the condominium was not locked and I removed my shoes before entering.

Yusof: Who did you see?

Saiful: Anwar. He was seated at a dining table in the living room.

Yusof: What did you do?

Saiful: I sat on a chair at the same table.

The witness said he handed over the documents to Anwar, discussed their work schedule before Anwar asked him a direct question.

Yusof: What was the question?

Saiful: Anwar asked, “Can I **** you today?”

Yusof: What did you feel?

Saiful: Angry and frightened.

Yusof: What did you say?

Saiful: I told him that I was not prepared to do it.

The witness testified that Anwar was angry and ordered him to go into the bedroom.

Saiful said he complied.

In the bedroom, Anwar allegedly drew the curtains, shut the door and switched off the lights, but the room was not in total darkness.

Yusof: What happened there?

Saiful: I was instructed to go to the washroom and clean myself. I later came out wearing a towel.

Anwar, he said, was also in a white towel, standing at the
edge of the bed.

“He then asked me to come to him, and hugged me,” he said.

At this juncture, Anwar’s lead defence counsel Karpal Singh applied to the court that the rest of Saiful’s testimony be heard in camera.

Yusof objected, saying a public hearing was provided for under Section 15 of the Courts of Judicature Act.

Judge Datuk Mohamed Zabidin Mohd Diah, however, ruled that the courtroom would be cleared and proceedings today would be heard in private.

This means that Saiful’s testimony would only be heard in the presence of the judge, prosecution, defence and court officials.

LONDON — The planned merger of T-Mobile UK and Orange warning has created doubt of the Office of fair trading which could be a threaten competition.

"The OFT's initial view, following consultation, is that the joint venture threatens significantly to affect competition in mobile telecommunications in the UK," the agency said in a statement.

T-Mobile UK, which is owned by Germany's Deutsche Telekom, and Orange, which is owned by France Telecom, is planning to join forces too create a mobile operator that would have a 37-percent market share in Britain, beating nearest rival Vodafone - which holds 25 percent of the market.

The watchdog said it had made a formal request to the European Commission, which is also looking into the proposed merger, to refer the British aspects of the deal back to the OFT.

If the request is granted, the OFT said it would then examine the merger proposal to see if it required a more "in-depth investigation."

13 dead, 13 injured in Juarez shooting, Mexican police say

The victims' ages were between 14 and 19, Seguro said. No other information about the victims was immediately available.

10 billion dollars for vaccines by Gates!

DAVOS, Switzerland (AFP) - – Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, the world's richest man, on Friday promised 10 billion dollars (7.2 billion euros) to develop "miracle" vaccines for the world's poorest nations.

Gates announced at the World Economic Forum that the money will come over the next decade from the foundation he runs with his wife Melinda, and that vaccines will become the charity's top priority.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has now committed more than 25 billion dollars to various health projects, especially targeting AIDS and polio and other diseases that hit poor countries.

"We must make this the decade of vaccines," Gates said in Davos. "Vaccines already save and improve millions of lives in developing countries.

"Increased investment in vaccines by governments and the private sector could help developing countries dramatically reduce child mortality by the end of the decade," Gates said in a statement.

Melinda Gates added: "Vaccines are a miracle -- with just a few doses, they can prevent deadly diseases for a lifetime.

"Weve made vaccines our number-one priority at the Gates Foundation because weve seen first hand their incredible impact on childrens lives," she added.

UN agencies and campaign groups welcomed Gates stunning announcement.

"The Gates Foundations commitment to vaccines is unprecedented, but needs to be matched by unprecedented action," said World Health Organisation director general Margaret Chan.

"Its absolutely crucial that both governments and the private sector step up efforts to provide life-saving vaccines to children who need them most."

One, the activist group set up by rock singer Bono to fight against poverty and preventable disease, said Gates's money "is a testament to their belief in catalyzing transformative change."

But it also said that western governments and institutions must "accelerate their own investments in effective organizations."

Only one person in two among the Haitian population of more than nine million people has access to clean drinking water, and only 19 percent have decent sanitation.
On Friday, Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa became just the second foreign leader to visit Haiti since the quake, lending his voice to international calls for more emergency relief and assistance with reconstruction.

"This is a tragedy, a humanitarian tragedy. Haiti at this moment represents the pain of victims but also hope," Correa said.

Haitians living in sprawling makeshift camps in the ruins of Port-au-Prince and elsewhere complain that the flood of international aid arriving in the country is trickling down too slowly.

Many are trying to rebuild their lives, with marketplaces springing up on streets around the capital, although business is tough.

"It's very hard -- there aren't many buyers, but there are lots of sellers," said 24-year-old Rose Gardy-Joseph, sitting next to a basket full of colourful sweets, soft cheese and napkins.

But survivors also face rising insecurity, with thousands of criminals on the loose after the main jail collapsed in the quake and reports of rape and violence plaguing the weak and vulnerable.

The deputy head of the UN mission in Haiti, Anthony Banbury, said the United Nations did not want huge tent cities later turning into slums where there was poor sanitation, no security and child abuse.

The United Nations, along with aid agencies and security forces, must "do things smart, as well as fast, and that's a big challenge for us now," Banbury said.

The US State Department said it was spearheading a coordinated effort together with UNICEF, the Haitian government, the Red Cross and other agencies to combat the potential trafficking of children.

"There are also reports of measles and tetanus, including in resettlement camps, which is worrisome due to the high concentration of people," he told journalists in Geneva.

Haiti's desperate earthquake survivors faced a new deadly threat Friday as the United Nations reported a rise in cases of diarrhea, measles and tetanus in squalid tent camps for victims.

A vast foreign aid effort is struggling to meet survivors' needs 17 days after the disaster, which killed around 170,000 people and left one million homeless and short of food, water and medical attention.

And with medicine running low amid efforts to treat hundreds of thousands of injured and homeless cramped into makeshift camps, officials and aid groups are scrambling to avoid a potential public health calamity that could push the death toll higher.

UN agencies and Haiti's government aim to launch a vaccination campaign against measles, tetanus and diphtheria next week. Just 58 percent of Haitian infants were immunized before the quake, Garwood said.

He highlighted a "critical" need for surgeons, with an estimated 30 to 100 amputations being carried out every day in some hospitals, while supplies of anesthetics and antibiotics were also needed.

The 7.0-magnitude quake on January 12 decimated Haiti's already meager health system, creating conditions for disease to thrive in cramped refugee camps.

Conjure will target the urban market, but not simply by celebrity endorsement.
“It’s not just me attaching my name to it,” the Atlanta star told the Agence France-Presse. “Whenever I involve myself in a business, I submerge myself in it.”

Ludacris spent a week last January experimenting with over 40 new flavours until a taste was created which he felt would favour the targeted urban market.

“I wanted to learn as much as possible. It was great. It gave me a new appreciation for Cognac,” Ludacris stated.

Ludacris has certainly done his homework, as an estimated 60-80 percent of Cognac sales are from African Americans, in the American market. Cognac has long been associated with hip hop culture, and referenced by Jay-Z, Tupac, Nas and Dr. Dre in various songs.

It is clear that 2010 represents a tipping point in global history, and that the management of our future requires us above all to do it in the framework of rethinking our values, redesigning our systems and rebuilding our institutions.

One of the fundamental preconditions in rethinking our values framework should not only be anchored on social responsibility and environmental sustainability, but also on increased equity.

Rethinking our values provides the foundation for the necessary redesign of our systems, adapting them to the needs of society in the 21st century. This redesign must take place on all levels, but particularly on the global level, comprising the necessary framework, for example, for global financial and trade flows. These redesign efforts require a common vision, collaborative innovation and public-private partnerships for their long-term success.

Rethinking our values and redesigning our systems naturally leads to the rebuilding of our institutions - to make them more proactive and strategic; more inclusive, fostering greater multistakeholder engagement; more reflective of the new geo-political and geo-economic structures; and more inclusive of inter-generational accountability and responsibility.

The bricks we are using to build the post-crisis world can be found in new concepts which are based on greater citizen involvement and stronger government partnerships with other non-state actors. We have to incorporate much more expertise and knowledge into our global decision-making processes; we have to use social networking as an empowerment tool and more effectively harness our digital capital; we have to listen more intensively to the next generation.
